Golf, Soccer, and Tennis Begin Post-Season Play
We have reached the postseason in many of our Spring sports… soccer and baseball have historic conference championship aspirations and both are in action this Saturday. Meanwhile, MHSAA tournaments are already underway for varsity tennis and begin this weekend for track and field. There are a few precious opportunities left to support the Gryphons at home before we get deeper into postseason. Be sure to check the varsity schedule below… Go Hills!
Conference Championship Within Sight for Girls Soccer
On Tuesday, Varsity soccer, now holding a record of 10-2-2, hosted Orchard Lake St. Mary’s in the semifinals of the CHSL championship tournament. Greenhills earned the top seed in the tournament last week with a win over the top ranked team in Division 4, Royal Oak Shrine. On Tuesday, Greenhills got off to an early start thanks to 9th grader Sonia Kwon’s first half goal. St. Mary’s was able to respond, but senior Mia Melendez answered right back to give the Gryphons a 2-1 lead at halftime. Sophomore Cate Alumkal added a second half goal to help lead Greenhills to a 3-1 victory. View highlights here.
The team advances to the CHSL Championship on Saturday, May 17 at Noon at Shrine Catholic High School. The title game will be a re-match between Greenhills and Royal Oak Shrine. A win would give Greenhills its first conference championship since 2017.
Golf Finishes Fourth at CHSL Championship
The boys varsity golf team finished in fourth place at this week’s CHSL Conference Championship at Flint Golf Club. Sophomore Keating Holland earned First-Team All-Conference honors, leading the Gryphons in scoring. Holland shot 79, good for 9th place overall. Junior Tai Mackey shot 81, finishing in 13th place overall. The team will travel to Rustic Glen for the Clinton invitational this week before turning their attention to the MHSAA Regional tournament to close out the month.
Tennis Sweeps Regionals, Sets Focus on States
Varsity girls tennis, the three-time reigning state champion in division 4, began their title defense on Wednesday. Hosting regionals, Greenhills won regional championships in seven of eight flights en route to their fourth straight MHSAA Regional Championship. Now, the team will prepare to defend its state championship to close out the month. MHSAA's Division 4 State Championships will be held at the Midland Tennis Center May 29-31.
